The International Day of Charity was designated by the United Nations General Assembly in an effort to organize the world to help others. The day is celebrated every year on 5th of September, the death anniversary Mother Theresa of Calcutta, one of the most charitable individuals of our time. Things Can We Do on International Day of Charity

1. Start Small

We don’t need to do big scale charitable work like what Mother Theresa did. We can always start small. Helping those in need around us is a start. A little gesture of help might not make a big difference for us, but helping or sharing to those who have less does make a tremendous difference for them.

In the words of Mother Teresa, “Never worry about numbers. Help one person at a time, and always start with the person nearest.”

2. Volunteer

We can always volunteer. There are many government or private agencies wherein we can volunteer with our skills. We can read for the elderly. Teach the out of school youth. We can do a lot of things. I am sure our time and skills will be appreciated.

3. Support a Charitable Institution

If you don’t have the time to go and volunteer yourself, there are a lot of charitable institution where in you can support. Just find one that supports your ideals. There are those that help build homes for the homeless. There are those that help individuals gain skills and enable them to be self-sufficient. And there are those, like World Vision, that is dedicated to working with children, families, and communities to overcome poverty and injustice. They help send children to school and provide for their needs.

The International Day of Charity is not widely celebrated around the world. There only a small sector who remembers this day, usually those who are involved in charitable work. But for us, individuals or families, we can always start and make a difference now. There is no such thing as late when it comes to giving and helping those who are in need. Start with those who are near you and continue paying it forward.
