What is the Fair Debt Collection Practice Act?

Posted on May 14, 2011December 6, 2013 by MOMMY RUBY

Sometimes because of the bustling activities in life, we tend to overlook certain things. One of the most overlooked things is bills payment. There are times when we only get to be reminded of a bill we have to pay when we get next month’s bill and it’s double the amount or worse, when we start receiving reminders from debt collectors.

Reminders are done, most often than not, through phone calls from collection agents and quite frankly, the calls border from annoying to hostile. Debt collectors often make snide remarks and are often very abusive. They don’t let up to the point of embarrassing the consumers. That’s why the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act was formed.

This act aims to end the abusive behavior of debt collectors, create guidelines which debt collectors must follow when it comes to making collection arrangements, provide consumers an avenue for disputes and most importantly define the rights of consumers when it comes to dealing with debt collectors.

wahhh. talaga, ako din, nakakalimutan ko ang mga bills ko unless papadalhan ako ng mga company na pinagkakautangan ko, like GLobe, Smart and even my Credit Card. dapat talaga i manage ng mabuti ang ating spendings para di tayo mabaon sa utang:(

The only thing that makes me work too hard is the bill payment. We are paying the rent, internet, water and electricity bill monthly. Not to mention the food and other necessities. Kung walang ghost writing, di ako makakashare sa pagbabayad.

Is this act applicable in the Philippines? Most credit card collectors here harass their clients.

this act helps to protect consumers. There are many rules debt collectors have to go by when collecting a debt. Search FDCPA in goog and learn what your rights are, if collectors are harrassing you.
