After the commotion brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, hearing about another virus being confirmed here in the Philippines is rather worrying. News like this doesn’t sit well with the masses as fearing the unknown somehow rekindles the distress everyone felt back in 2020. For those who were severely affected, it is terrifying.
A few weeks ago, I was privileged to attend a webinar on monkeypox. When I was invited, I didn’t think twice. I had to attend because I wanted to know more about this seemly new yet deadly virus. I wanted to know the causes, symptoms, treatment, and prevention of monkeypox. As well all know, it is better safe than sorry.
MONKEYPOX: EMERGING HEALTH CRISIS
The webinar was entitled. “MONKEYPOX: Emerging Health Crisis.” It was presented by PhilCare,
PhilLife, Comm&Sense, Inc., and Stitch Tech Solutions. The aim was to shed light on this emerging health threat, including how to prevent and treat it. The speaker was infectious disease expert Dr. Christopher John N. Tibayanan.
Dr. Tibayanan talked about the virus, where it came from, what are the symptoms, and how it was from the same family as cowpox and smallpox. Aside from that, he even mentioned how it was transmitted, the stages a patient will go through, starting the incubation period up to recovery, complications it can cause, treatment, and among others. He even noted the number of cases the Philippines has. He also compared monkeypox to chickenpox and measles on how symptoms manifest.
Though it has no established antiviral treatment, hospitals still try their best to deal with the virus and treat the symptoms. So far, early intervention has helped those who were infected.
With COVID-19 still hanging around and monkeypox joining the bandwagon, thinking about our health and our families can be a bit worrying. Aside from these health concerns, we have dengue, other health issues, and emergencies to talk about. So, how do we stop worrying? Well, if you have an HMO (Health maintenance organization) covering for you, then there is nothing to worry about in case of emergencies, but what if you don’t have one? What now?
