Before I heard Lady Gaga’s song “Poker Face,” I honestly had no idea what it was. At first I thought it was something that was related to poker bonus or playing the game, but then I realized it was actually about the facial expression when one is playing games like the ones on pokerstars promotions.
From what I know now, a “poker face” is actually a face that does not show any possible interpretable expression which most poker players have already mastered. All the while I thought it was just being fierce. I guess, however, when it relates to Lady Gaga, it does mean being fierce or basically unreadable.
I found this very useful because I am very bad at bluffing and when I am trying to trick my kids, they often have a way of knowing whether or not I am bluffing them or really telling them the truth. Now I want to find a way to make sure my face does not reveal anything at times. But from what I heard, that could also be a bad thing because some people may think I am not being genuine enough.
The thing is, expressions are very much tied to emotions. Most of the time it is involuntary, but there are a few people who have been able to control their facial expressions at will so much so that they are impassive or not so transparent. However, it can be nearly impossible for some people to totally avoid expressions when certain emotions hit.
Microexpressions are the very small brief expressions that are revealed in the person’s face. For a brief moment, the emotion is shown but can disappear in an instant. Now if I cannot adapt the staid and expressionless face that Lady Gaga is talking about, perhaps I can master microexpressions in order to show total control.
