My Simple Goal-Setting Process for Solo Moms (No Overwhelm!)

Posted on January 3, 2025January 3, 2025 by MOMMY RUBY

As a solo mom, goal-setting hasn’t always been easy for me. There were seasons when just making it through the day felt like an accomplishment. But over the years, I’ve discovered a process that works—something simple, practical, and, most importantly, kind to myself.

I thought I’d share how I approach goal-setting as a solo mom. It’s not a rigid system or a long checklist but rather a rhythm that fits into the chaos and beauty of solo parenting.

It Starts with a Quiet Moment

I used to believe I needed an elaborate planning session to figure out my goals. You know, candles lit, a brand-new planner, and uninterrupted time. (Ha! As if uninterrupted time exists in a solo mom’s world!)

Now, I just grab whatever moment I can find—usually after my kids are asleep or during my morning coffee. I sit quietly, pray, and ask myself: What matters most to me right now?

Sometimes it’s as simple as wanting to spend more time with my kids or finding a way to save for an emergency fund. Other times, it’s about something personal, like prioritizing my health or finally working on that dream I’ve been putting off.

I Keep It Real

In the past, I’d overwhelm myself with big, lofty goals because that’s what everyone else seemed to be doing. But I’ve learned that as a solo mom, it’s okay to scale things down. Small steps are still steps forward.

For example, instead of saying, “I’m going to save a ton of money this year,” I’ll break it into something doable: “This month, I’ll save ₱500.” It’s a small win, but it feels so good when I accomplish it.

I Choose Goals That Feel Good and a Little Scary

Here’s the thing: Goals shouldn’t feel like another burden. They should inspire you, excite you, or at least make you feel a little lighter. Not easy, but something a little scary that moves you out of your comfort zone.

Last year, I set a goal to wake up at 5 AM every day because I thought that’s what “successful” people do. Spoiler alert: It didn’t work for me! I ended up exhausted and cranky, which wasn’t good for anyone. Will I stop? No. I figured out that sleeping should always be a priority if I want to wake up early.

Now, I ask myself, Does this goal fit into my life as it is? If it doesn’t, I tweak it until it feels doable.

I Write It Down, Even If It’s Messy

I’m not one of those moms with a Pinterest-perfect planner. Honestly, my goal-setting is scribbled on whatever notebook or scrap of paper I can find. Then sometimes, or not, transfer it to a planner.

But there’s something powerful about writing it down. Seeing my goals on paper makes them feel real. And when I look back later, it’s a reminder of what I’ve accomplished—even if it’s just one small thing.

I Celebrate the Little Wins

This part is so important. As solo moms, we do so much every day, and we rarely get credit for it. So, when I reach a goal—no matter how small—I take a moment to celebrate.

Sometimes it’s as simple as treating myself to a quiet cup of coffee or watching a favorite show guilt-free. Other times, I’ll share my win with my kids, so they see the value of setting and achieving goals too.

The Beauty of Progress, Not Perfection

One of the best lessons I’ve learned is that it’s okay if I don’t achieve every goal I set. Life happens—unexpected expenses, sick days, or just the need to rest.

But I’ve found that even when I don’t reach the finish line, the progress I make along the way still matters. It’s in the trying that growth happens, and that’s a win in itself.

So, if you’re a fellow solo mom wondering how to set goals without adding more stress to your life, let me just say this: Keep it simple. Be kind to yourself. Celebrate every little step forward.

Your journey, just like mine, is uniquely beautiful—and your goals are worth pursuing, no matter how small they seem. And lastly! Our source of strength is in Jesus! Proverbs 19:21 states, “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails”. Prayerfully go over your goals!

What are your goals for this year? I’d love to hear about them in the comments!

Your approach to goal-setting as a solo mom is inspiring! Keeping it real, celebrating small wins, and embracing progress over perfection are such valuable lessons. Your journey is a beautiful reminder that even small steps forward matter.
